This is the varient edition designated as 'Colonial Edition' in red ink to front panel and spine of dust jacket. Cloth of spine and extremities fading slightly, some dust soiling to top, light foxing to last quarter of outside edge. Dust jacket overall badly dust soiled, worn at head and heel of spine and corners with a few mm of paper loss at those points, 1 cm tear to top edge of rear panel, top edge of front panel near spine, 2 cm tear to bottom edge of front panel near spine a few smaller nicks and creases at edges.. John Major, London.,1824. SECOND MAJOR EDITION. Illustrated with 14 copper engraved plates and several woodcuts throughout the text. Two small patches of browning affecting the top outer corner of ten leaves, otherwise a very good copy in fine nineteenth century binding by Thomson of Exeter, with binders ticket on front paste down. Full tan calf, raised bands, compartments fully gilt. Red title label, gilt. Boards with double blind ruled and one gilt ruled borders. Marbled endpapers. School prize plate on front paste down shows that this copy was given as a prize in January 1842. Previous owners name(dated 1881) and ink name stamp on blank endpapers. Front hinge neatly repaired. Some minor rubbing to edges but generally a very good copy in an attractive nineteenth century binding.:

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
