About This Item
1858. ALDRICH, Thomas Bailey. THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE NEVER DID RUN SMOOTH. NY: Rudd & Carleton, 1858. Sm. 8vo., embossed green cloth. First Edition, first state, with no terminal advertisements and without the English translation for a line of Arabic appearing on p. . [BAL 251]. Signed presentation from Aldrich, to contemporary fellow-poet William Winter, on the front endpaper: "William Winter/ With the "'True Love'" of/ T.B. Aldrich." Also, with Winters' personal bookplate on the front pastedown and with his ownership signature on the verso of the front endpaper. Winter also has made a few pencil marks in the outer margins of a few pages. An early association copy between two well-known writers- both just beginning their literary careers. Aldrich also makes mention of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Thousand-And-Second Tale of Scheherazade" in his Preface: "To this same Arabic Wonder-Book [Tellmenow Isitsoornot] is Mr. Poe greatly indebted for his Thousand and Second Tale." Very Good (little foxing to text & some minor fade to cloth). $450.00.
