Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1846. Small Octavo. 18th edition. 330pp. Robert Pollok (1798-1827) gained international fame in the 19th century. His epic poem "The Course of Time" had much in common with Milton's "Paradise Lost", with which it is often compared, but its religious outlook was quite different. Pollok was a Calvinist with a Covenanter background. The book was published in several editions, both at home and in the United States, throughout the 19th century. Unfortunately, Pollok did not live to see its widespread success as he died of tuberculosis. A handsome copy bound tin 3/4 polished brown calf over dark brown pebble grained cloth, raised bands ruled in gilt, compartments decorated in blind, green morocco spine label gilt, all edges speckled red. No names or bookplates, clean and bright throughout without foxing.
