Each plate with the title printed below the border. 95 line illustrations throughout, some full page. Previous owners neat name on front blank endpaper otherwise a fine copy in original burgundy cloth with gilt illustrations and lettering to front board and spine. Front board with quadruple ruled black borders, spine ruled in gilt. In the scarce original publshers dustwrapper with colour illustration mounted onto the front panel, below black lettering and four line border. Flaps and other panels lettered in black. Original printed price (15/-) on spine has been blacked out neatly. Aside from a couple of tiny chips to the wrapper this is a beautiful fine example of this well produced edition. Scarce in this condition.:

Contemporary quarter calf over cloth, spines elaborately decorated in gold, marbled endpapers. Each volume is signed by the author. An in-depth history of engraving in Europe from the early 1400s to the late 1700s. Includes biographical notes on the artists and tables with the engravers' monograms. Wear to extremities, two tears to cloth (to lower edge of volume two and three), some annotations in pencil on the margins, small note affixed to the front pastedown endpaper of volume one (with an explanation in Italian on how to clean old prints). ; Octavo.

Bookplate on verso of title page. Tight and clean. This is a first American edition of Stevenson's short story collection. Uncommon in original yellow wraps. This copy is from the estate of Rex Maughan (1936-2021), major Robert Louis Stevenson collector and archivist who, as Chairman of the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, greatly contributed to the preservation of Stevenson's estate in Valima, Samoa.

Good/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 194pp. Blind stamped boards, gilt stamped floral border, gilt stamping and gilt lettering to spine, all edges gilt, 7 engraved plates with tissue-guards, signed on editor's page "Maria G. Haro." Edge worn, spine chipped with minor loss, endpapers stained, very occasional foxing to text.

London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1824. 1824 second edition of this rare, collectible volume. The first of five books in a series by the author "of sketches of village scenes and vividly drawn characters was based upon life in (the village of) Three Mile Cross" where she lived near Berkshire, England. Her Wikipedia biography describes "Her writing has all the charm of unaffected spontaneous humour, combined with quick wit and literary skill." Rubbed gray and brown marbled boards with leather corners and leather extended spine. Backstrip of spine is missing and has been replaced with paper strip with typed title which is peeling from front cover. Leather corners are worn and the embossed design on the leather cornes and spine is worn but still visable. Bumped corners. Marbling on outside pages. 292 surprisingly bright pages. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Illustrated with an original portrait etching of Daragnes by Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac, 11 black-and-white Daragnes plates, three depicting lesbian scenes, and an original Daragnes hand-colored engraving laid in showing a husband walking in on his wife in bed with her lover - a scene from Fielding's Tom Jones.
