About This Item

Cooperstown, NY: Otsego County Historical Society, 1957. Third Edition [stated], Presumed first printing thus. Wraps. Good. 90. [2] pages. Illustrations. Bibliography. Format is approximately 8 inches by 10 inches. Some cover wear. A pictorial look at Cooperstown, New York on Otsego Lake. This historic town in the home of "The National Baseball Hall of Fame" and the birthplace and home of the renown famous writer James Fenimore Cooper. This work seeks to address the town's entirety--its early days, James Fenimore Cooper, Tourism, Baseball Hall of Fame, and aspects of local history. Louis Jones was director of the New York State Historical Association and its Farmers' Museum at Cooperstown, N.Y., and is the author of numerous articles on folklore and folk arts. In 1947, Louis Jones began his quarter-century tenure as NYSHA's top executive, overseeing evolution of "The Fenimore House," additions to The Farmers' Museum (including the centerpiece Cornwallville Church) and, in 1964, the Cooperstown Graduate Program's (CGP) creation, a collaboration then and now between NYSHA and SUNY Oneonta. The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an American history museum and Hall of Fame, located in Cooperstown, New York, and operated by private interests. It serves as the central point for the study of the history of baseball in the United States and beyond, displays baseball-related artifacts and exhibits, and honors those who have excelled in playing, managing, and serving the sport. The Hall's motto is "Preserving History, Honoring Excellence, Connecting Generations." The word Cooperstown is often used as shorthand (or a metonym) for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The Hall of Fame was established in 1939 by Stephen Carlton Clark, the owner of a local hotel. Clark had sought to bring tourists to a city hurt by the Great Depression, which reduced the local tourist trade, and Prohibition, which devastated the local hops industry. A new building was constructed, and the Hall of Fame was dedicated on June 12, 1939.
