Rogers (1804-1882) was an American geologist and founder of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His brother Henry D. Rogers (1808-1866) was also an American geologist; he taught geology at the University of Pennsylvania. While William B. Rogers was teaching at William and Mary College he conducted a series of geological surveys of Virginia. This report consists of: I. Geology of a Portion of the Peninsula between the James and York Rivers -- II. Description of Some New Miocene Fossil Shells -- III. Of the Place in the Geological Series to which These Deposits Belong -- IV. Of the Origin of the Deposit Overlying the Miocene Shell Marl -- V. Eocene Formation of Virginia -- VI.
