SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR "To 'Ma' and 'Billy' Sunday", a full page inscription dated Wednesday, Aug. 2nd, 1916 - " To 'Ma' and 'Billy' Sunday from The Portland Ad Club - This book is man's effort to portray something of the grandeur and the glory of the Gorge of the Columbia where the hand of God wrought mightily~ We hope that you will come often to see us and enjoy it, since the highway which the people of the Oregon Country have built connects us with your dooryard - Our latch string is always out to both of you. S.C.L The Highw Engineer". Billy Sunday was a popular outfielder in baseball's Major Leagues in the 1880s whose conversion to Christianity led him to become the most popular and influential evangelist of the first 2 decades of the Twentieth Century. He socialized with Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, and counted both Herbert Hoover and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. as friends. It is estimated that he preached to more than one hundred million people face-to-face over the course of his lifetime. His wife "Ma" Nell Sunday was the love of his life and she also became his revival administrator, to great success. The book is Very Good, cloth lightly soiled and with 2 small holes top front gutter, top corner bump. 144 pp.with black and white and color photographs and a color fold-out map. . Russ Lord". The Civilian Conservation Corp was established by Congress March 31, 1933 as part of Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal, as a way to provide jobs for young, unemployed men during the Great Depression. The Panaca, Nevada "outfit" built the water tower at Cathedral Gorge State park among other projects in the area. Near Fine, top edge a bit dusty, in a Very Good dust jacket, old tape mends, spine faded. Introduction by William Allen White, 310 pp. including bibliography, illustrated with more than 30 black and white photos, mostly credited to named individuals who were part of the SCS (Soil Conservation Service) . Damp wrinkling to pages. Some soiling and spots to front cover. Damp wrinkling to back cover. Still, a very readable copy, with 25 color plates and other illustrations, all intact. This book is a faithful reprint by Lancaster of the 1915 work. It is Lancaster's story of the valley, a wonderful collection of essays about the regions natives, early missionaries, fur traders and soldiers. He discusses many of the area's great natural landmarks, from waterfalls, rock formations but also manmade wonders, including bridges, buildings, and tunnels. More than 100 images capture the qualities of the Columbia gorge.
