By the time Burton travelled across the American West he had already explored Arabia in disguise and searched for the source of the Nile with John Hanning Speke.Burton used his excellent eye to provide one of the best contemporary accounts of the Later Day Saints. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Borzoi Edition (stated). Edited, with Notes, by Fawn Brodie. Dark blue cloth binding with decorative stamping in red on the front cover and spine; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; Introduction and Note, xliv; 654 pages (includes five Appendices); with Index, xxii. Facsimile of the 1861 Title Page, Burton's Preface; twenty-two illustrations from the 1861 edition. Hints only of rub to corners; some spotting to the red topstain and the fore-edge. Else a Fine copy. The dustjacket is unclipped, but Good only, with chips to the top of the spine, edge of the front flap and corners. The rear flap is separated but present, now held in place with the archival plastic cover. A solid copy of an important milestone in the Burton canon.. First Thus. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
