About This Item
London: Thos McLean, 1832. Color lithograph. Brown wood frame. Near fine. Hand colored lithograph, 10.5 x 14.8 inches within border frame in matted glass fronted frame wired for hanging. Artist is John Doyle (DB) with his circular embossed seal in lower left corner. Doyle experienced great success with his political cartoons using the new medium of lithography. His caricatures were mostly faithful likenesses of his subjects. His sons included the illustrator James William Edmund Doyle and painter/illustrator Richard (Dicky) Doyle. Caption reads, "I beg gentleman you will not laugh to loud lest you disturb the slumbers of our honourable chairman." A scene during the debate in Committee on the third Reform Bill, Sir Charles Wetherell, member of Parliament speaks of Bernal, (asleep) the Chairman of The Committee. His omment produced a general roar of laughter which raised him from his slumber. On the Ministerial front bench are (left to right) Sir. J. Graham, Althorp, member in wig, and a smiling Lord J. Russell. Slight rubbing to vertical portions of the picture frame.
