First issue, six hand-colored plates by Alken, all with tissue guards, additional pictorial vignette title, and forty-three illustrations on wood engraved by Cook. GORDON RAY p.36, said of Alken, "He worked in color aquatint in a style akin to that of Rowlandson and the early George Cruikshank, passing from the broader caricature in his early books to a more sober recording of the passing scene in his later." TOOLEY calls the red cloth a later binding, but notes copies in red do conform to the first issue text. Bookplates front and back cover pastedowns, minor spotting and toning to margins, backstrip extremities rubbed.

Artist is John Doyle (DB) with his circular embossed seal in lower left corner. Doyle experienced great success with his political cartoons using the new medium of lithography. His caricatures were mostly faithful likenesses of his subjects. His sons included the illustrator James William Edmund Doyle and painter/illustrator Richard (Dicky) Doyle. Caption reads, "I beg gentleman you will not laugh to loud lest you disturb the slumbers of our honourable chairman." A scene during the debate in Committee on the third Reform Bill, Sir Charles Wetherell, member of Parliament speaks of Bernal, (asleep) the Chairman of The Committee. Signed by Stephen Kemble in red ink (faint) lower left corner of imprint. George Stephen Kemble (21 April 1758 - 5 June 1822) was a successful English theatre manager, actor, and writer, and a member of the famous Kemble family. His sister Sarah Siddons, a famous actress. He managed the original Theatre Royal, Newcastle for fifteen years (1791-1806). Tiny nicks at head and foot outside image area. Robert Dighton's early work was issued anonymously, but by the early 1790s it became increasingly well known and he began etching and publishing under his own name, and his success allowed him to open a shop in Charing Cross. Bright, clean print.
