New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1983. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. Uncorrected Proof in plain blue printed wraps. Although his previous collection achieved some popularity, this title is really Carver's breakthrough and break-away (from the restraints of Gordon Lish's style) book. In it, Carver moved beyond the constraining label of minimalism to mine an emotional depth not present in his previous work and which would blossom fully in his next and last book. The title story and "A Small, Good Thing" rank among the best stories of the latter twentieth century. Publisher's information sheet stapled to the inside front cover.
Synopsis
Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His first collection of stories, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please (a National Book Award nominee in 1977), was followed by What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral (nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1984), and Where I'm Calling From in 1988, when he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He died in August of that year, shortly after completing the poems of A New Path to the Waterfall.
