Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1941. First Edition. Hardcover. Covers soiled and worn, lacking the dustwrapper. Good in a Fine custom morocco-backed clamshell box. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author for George [Davis] "Who is my Best and Campiest Friend-- /And who, also, is the first/person to really take to this book-/You have helped me and/encouraged me in all ways/that were in your power-/And you know that I love you./Carson." Davis, a magazine editor who later married Lotte Lenya, made his house in Brooklyn into something of an artists colony serving as a home at various times for McCullers, W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Paul Bowles, Gypsy Rose Lee, and others. Davis discovered the manuscript for REFLECTIONS, which according to Virginia Spencer Carr in THE LONELY HUNTER: A BIOGRAPHY OF CARSON MCCULLERS, lay dormant in a dresser drawer for almost a year (page 99), and urged McCullers to let his magazine, Harper's Bazaar, publish it. A First Edition of ìThe Catcher in the Ryeî in First Issue Jacket SALINGER, J.D.. The Catcher in the Rye. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First edition, in first issue dust jacket (with Salinger's photo on rear of jacket). Octavo (7 11/16 x 5 1/4 inches; 196 x 135 mm). [8], [1]-277, [1, blank] pp. Publisherís full black cloth. Spine lettered and stamped in gilt. In a first issue dust jacket printed in red, black and yellow with cropped photograph of Salinger on rear cover, flap priced at $3.00. Book with light dampstain rings on front and back outer covers. Otherwise book is pristine and text is nearly unread. Jacket with an almost invisible one-inch closed tear to bottom of front panel, and another slightly smaller invisible tear to the back panel. Some dampstain discoloration to inside of jacket, just barely noticeable from the outer back panel. Otherwise a near fine jacket. Housed in a red marbled paper over black cloth slipcase with red morocco tips. Overall an excellent copy. "The Catcher in the Rye is an all-time classic in coming-of-age literature- an elegy to teenage alienation, capturing the deeply human need for connection and the bewildering sense of loss as we leave childhood behind... J.D. Salinger's classic novel of teenage angst and rebellion was first published in 1951. The novel was included on Time's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was named by Modern Library and its readers as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century." (Goodreads). Starosciak A30.a. HBS 68657. $22,500

New York: Macmillan Company, 1903. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First edition. A touch of rubbing at the bottom of the boards, easily fine with the white painted "snow" on the spine and front board especially bright in a lovely, fine dust jacket with the slightest of rubbing, strong and supple at the folds, and devoid of the usual professional restoration. Housed in a custom quarter green morocco and cloth clamshell case. Along with *White Fang*, one of the two great novels for which the author seems destined to be remembered. His empathy for animals, combined with his appreciation of the Darwinian lessons of life, here overcome London's occasionally simplistic political agenda, resulting in a classic tale for both children and adults. A superior copy.
