Presentation copy from Langston Hughes, along with inscriptions from other cast and production members (Muriel Rahn who played Cora Lewis and Jan Meyerowitz who wrote the music). Description:
1788 HANDEL Composer Dettingen Te Deum Classical Music Austrian Succession WARAlongside Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederic Handel was one of the two greatest Baroque music composers. Best known for his 'Messiah', Handel was responsible for hundreds of pieces of music, many of which were written with liturgical texts. Handel's 1743 masterpiece 'Dettingen Te Deum' was written in honor of the British victory at Dettingen in the War of Austrian Succession.
Handel, who had become proud of his English home, wrote this setting of 'Te Deum'
for the day King George II appointed a day of celebration in honor of the victory. Like many of Handel's works, it features chorus, full orchestra, and solos.
This rare edition was printed in 1788 by Arnold according to the "STC of Music Printed Before 1825".

2 pp. Folio (ca. 348 x 268 mm.). 56 measures scored for both spoken and sung voices, including sections for chorus with instrumental accompaniment. Apparently complete. Marked "Scène IX les mêmes: puis les trois emissaires du Sultan - puis Croquendot ..." Notated in black and red ink with some markings in blue crayon. Unsigned. Slightly worn; creased at central fold. La femme à barbe, in two acts to a libretto by A. de la Tourrasse, was first performed at Versailles on 2 June 1938. Delvincourt, a French composer, was appointed director of the Versailles Conservatory in 1931 and of the Paris Conservatoire in 1941, a position he held until his death in 1954; he received the Prix de Rome in 1913 for his cantata Faust et Helene. "His most important decisions were the founding of the Orchestre des Cadets and a chorus (so avoiding the evacuation of his pupils to Germany), and his invitation to Messiaen, despite much comment, to teach the philosophy of music ... After Debussy and Ravel, he was one…

Some items signed in fountain pen, others in pencil. Many musical notations in Savitt's hand added to the scores. I have no way of knowing if any of these are complete scores, so it's probably best to consider all of the titles as fragments. Description:
London, Ewer & Co. [185???] Overstamped in red: Jordens & Martens. New-York 785 Broadway. Hard Cover. 1 p.l., 108 pages; 26.5 cm. Composed in 1843-1845 on commission from the King of Prussia and first performed in December of 1845, Athalie was the last production of Mendelssohn's Berlin period. The first edition was Leipzig, 1849. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) Biblical tragedy was first performed in 1691. This version, with English libretto by William Bartholomew (1793-1867), seems to be the first English edition, and, with its publisher's overstamp, the first American as well. It appears to be earlier than the editions in the NUC (cf. 375: 552-553) or in the Boston or New York Public Libraries catalogs. It certainly dates before 1867 when Ewer merged with Novello. Vg/ bound in 3/4 leather with name label on front cover of Charles F. Leonard (a bass if the pencil markings are his). Stock#OB201.
