About This Item
No Place: No Publisher. Unbound. Fair. Landing Op Het Eiland Erramanga, Een Van De Nieuwe Hebriden. Black and white print after William Hodges original painting. Circa late 1700's. Vivid depiction of a landing party fighting with natives on Vanuatu in the Pacific, with men in landing boats firing upon a mob of natives armed with spears and rocks. Notable is the depiction of Captain Cook aiming his gun at the crowd. Piece measures 19 inches long by 9 ¾ inches tall. From a Dutch language edition of Cook's travels, plate number LV as indicated at the top right. In FAIR/GOOD condition. A 1 by 3 ½ inch rectangle missing from the upper right margin, with a 4 inch jagged tear also at the upper right, affecting the illustration. This has been repaired, somewhat crudely, on the rear, by a previous owner. Vertical fold crease near the right edge. Minor general soiling and darkening to the piece, with a small faint dampstain in the center right margin. Faint browning/dampstain along the left margin, slightly affecting the illustration. Minor chipping and tearing at the center left edge. Lower left corner rounded.
