About This Item

[Brockton, MA]: F.W. Glasier, [Standard Printers], 1905. Oblong 8vo. 9 x 5.75 in. [32 pp (unpaginated).], photo-illustrated throughout. Illustrated tan softcovers, cover art of stylish woman walking her dog in black, red & tan, reminiscent of Will Bradley cover art (slight shelfwear), NF copy. First edition of this surprisingly scarce souvenir brochure touting the successes of the Brockton, Massachusetts Fair, which featured a “Fakir’s Row” Midway selling American pop corn and potato chips, horse racing, horse jumping, cattle judging, and The Four Lukins trapeze act, including one part suspended from balloon. The 1905 Brockton Fair also featured the appearance of Augustus Roy Knabenshue’s (1875-1960) Airship, who only a few months earlier in Oct., 1904 at the St. Louis World’s Fair had made the first dirigible flight in America. While giving his demonstration, the engine misfired, and Knabenshue lost steering control, and the airship drifted into a flagpole tearing the gas bag netting, fortunately he was able to drop down ropes, and achieve a safe landing. After repairs, the airship flew again. Worldcat locates 1 copy (US Air Force Academy).
