About This Item

London: Greenhill Books, 1993. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. 352 pp, 8-1/2 by 12 inches. Scarlet cloth boards, black-and-white and colour illustrations. A very good clean copy with dust jacket having tears along top, otherwise, good condition.

Continental influences and contemporary criticisms are assessed. Harrington suggests reasons why some wars were illustrated less than others.

From the Dust Jacket: "The second part of British Artists and War is a unique, comprehensive catalogue of more than 800 surviving oil paintings, depicting soldiers in battle and on campaign, in public and private collections around the world, including exhibition and provenance details where known."

British Artists and War is an important reference work, examining how artists at home and in the field dealt with the subject of war during a period of more than 200 years, and how these images were perceived by the public in Britain. British Artists and War examines in detail the artistic inspiration and response to wars throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, including the Napoleonic Wars and Waterloo, the Crimea, the Zulu War and the Edwardian period to the opening of the Great War in 1914. The book has 16 pages of colour and 220 black-and-white illustrations. Heavy book and extra postage will be required.
