About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Slight shelf wear to top/bottom edges dw/dj.8vo, 288pp. On 21 Nov,1983 fifteen year old Lynda Mann was raped and murdered near her home in the Leicestershire village of Narborough.Nearly three years later the police had still not found her murderer when Dawn Ashworth, also fifteen, was similarly raped and killed near that same village. In the massive hunt that followed, Leicestershire police arrested a young kitchen porter who had been sighted several times near the murder location. In custody, the kitchen porter, who had a history of molesting children, confessed to the murder of Dawn Ashworth.Convinced they had found the killer of both Dawn and Lynda, the police enlisted the aid of a scientific discovery that had only just been announced: the technique known as 'genetic fingerprinting'.The lab report that came back was devastating; the kitchen porter was innocent of both the first and second murders. But the tests did prove conclusively that both crimes had been committed by the same man.So began the massive blood sampling exercise that came to be known as 'the blooding' and that led at last to the arrest and conviction of the rapist and murderer who had terrorised the Leicestershire countryside, and whose callous confession chilled the blood of hardened police officers. WAMBAUGH has turned his attention to a fascinating British murder investigation, one that will certainly go down in history as the first to use a technique that may transform forensic science as much as finger-printing did in the 1890's.
