The complete volume II (all 10 issues) printed in Czech and bound with the annual index in the front and the 10 front covers and foreign language (including English, French and Russian) summaries in the back. This post World War II avante garde revival is a complete review of the Czech arts scene including poetry, photograhy, film, theater, dance, painting, sculpture, musical composition, architecture, urban planning, etc. Covers a two year period, 1947-48. Highlights include work by and articles on: Picasso, Jorn, Klee, Karl Teige, Max Bill, Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy, Chagall, Picabia, Robinson Jeffers, Kenneth Patchen, Langston Hughes, Bertrolt Brecht, Le Corbusier, Prochazka, Apollinaire, Walker Evans, Weegee, Cartier-Bresson, El Lissitzky, Pasternak, Rilke, Henry Moore, Michaux, Leger, Calder, Frank Lloyd Wright, Czeslaw Milosz, Sudek, Capek, a fold-out drawing by Matisse, an entire issue devoted to photography (Karl Teige-Max Bill debate), issues on urban planning, dance, murals, theater, and much in each issue on Czech and Central European avant-garde modern artists of the time. A very artistic endeavor. Some light water staining to bottom edges, the first few pp and bottom of front board. Has some minor edge wear to the beautiful green marbled boards. Cloth spine has the green title "Blok-rocnik II". About 600 pp overall. The covers bound in the back uphold the earlier between the wars avant-garde tradition. Images upon request.

Brno: Blok, 1946 Quarto 30 x 21.2 cm. The most important postwar art journal in Czechoslovakia appearing after WWII to the end of the communist era. The magazine was founded on the principles of continuing the rich era of art publishing in the First Republic and showcasing both national and international trends in contemporary art and culture. It managed to succeed in this through its first two years looking westward. It continued the tradition of the earlier art journals with a strong emphasis on children’s and decorative arts and was inclusive of all visual arts at home and abroad. In its final year it tried to accommodate the state directives of Socialist Realism, looking eastward to the Soviet Block countries.
