About This Item
Brno: Blok, 1946 Quarto 30 x 21.2 cm. The most important postwar art journal in Czechoslovakia appearing after WWII to the end of the communist era. The magazine was founded on the principles of continuing the rich era of art publishing in the First Republic and showcasing both national and international trends in contemporary art and culture. It managed to succeed in this through its first two years looking westward. It continued the tradition of the earlier art journals with a strong emphasis on childrens and decorative arts and was inclusive of all visual arts at home and abroad. In its final year it tried to accommodate the state directives of Socialist Realism, looking eastward to the Soviet Block countries. One of its continuing highlights was the survey of the emerging postwar photography which continued in the coming decades. An important chronicle of the era, with visual and written examples of the explosive creativity which flourished in the brief period between the end of the Nazi occupation and communist takeover.
