Claitor's reprint of this classic set of the Goodspeed publications are viewed as a significant resource for American historians and genealogists because they contain economic data and personal biographies of many prominent American citizens. They provide an important snapshot of the lives and the economic situation of that era. Many other sets of the time often provided "puff" biographies paid for by the family. In addition to the famous personages from the state such as G.T. Beauregard, it has large sections (Chapter IX on the many facets of education in Louisiana; Chapter x on the Sanitary and Medical Organizations and the many issues to deal with Yellow Fever. The beginnings of the Universities and the key law cases. Besides over 1000 pages of significant information, volume 3 is a 119 page index to not only the family names, parishes, and plantations but many other access points with much on early New Orleans. A handsome set bound in black cloth lettered in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, no names or bookplates.
