About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1941. First Edition, First printing. Published June 20, 1941 [Stated]. Hardcover. Good/Fair. vi, [2], 605, [1] xxi, [1] pages. Index. DJ worn, torn, soiled and chipped. Name and date written inside front cover. Minor edge soiling. William Lawrence Shirer (/ a r r/; February 23, 1904 - December 28, 1993) was an American journalist and war correspondent. He wrote The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, a history of Nazi Germany that has been cited in scholarly works for more than 50 years. A foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune and the International News Service, Shirer was the first reporter hired by Edward R. Murrow for what would become a CBS radio team known as "Murrow's Boys". He became known for his broadcasts from Berlin, from the rise of the Nazi dictatorship through the first year of World War II. Shirer wrote more than a dozen books besides The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, including Berlin Diary; The Collapse of the Third Republic, which drew on his experience working in France from 1925 to 1933; and a three-volume autobiography, 20th Century Journey. Derived from a Kirkus review: Here's the answer to those who have wondered whether Shirer's veiled allusions on the air, speaking from Berlin, have cloaked pro-Nazi sympathies. Here's the message between and behind the lines. Here is as thrilling and vigorous and all-inclusive a denunciation of Germany, her leaders, her policies, her people, her actions, her purposes as has come in any book we have read. Millions have listened to Shirer, who, during seven years, has been on the ground at the crucial moment -- the fall of Austria, of Czecho-Slovakia, of Poland. This diary shows an amazing comprehension of what has been happening, before the world realized it. Shirer presents it all with fresh evidence, a human approach, and the intimate details that make one feel one has gone through it with him. This book is an important link in understanding what has been happening, is preparation for what is still to happen. It is absorbingly interesting reading. Often enough his prophetic insight has proved itself.

Synopsis

Berlin Diary (1934-1941) is a first-hand account of the rise of the Third Reich and its road to war, as witnessed by the American journalist William L. Shirer. Shirer, a radio reporter for CBS, covered Germany for several years until the Nazi press censors made it impossible for him to report objectively to his listeners in the United States; feeling increasingly uncomfortable, he left the country.
