New York: Harper and Row, 1971. First American Edition. 1/2 cloth. Fine/near fine. Pale maroon boards, with dark maroon 1/2 cloth. Unclipped dust jacket with tiny wear at top corner of spine.
The American edition was published posthumously. Stated first U.S edition. In back of the book is a biographical note by Lois Ames with 8 previously unpublished drawings by Sylvia Path. 296 pp.

Synopsis

The Bell Jar is writer and poet Sylvia Plath's only novel, which was originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963. The novel is semi-autobiographical with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef, with the protagonist's descent into mental illness paralleling Plath's own experiences with what may have been either bipolar disorder or clinical depression. Plath committed suicide a month after its first publication.
