New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1944. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. 8vo., 269pp. Solid Stated First Edition of Hersey's Pulitzer Prize winning first novel. Bound in a later state yellow cloth with titles in red on front board and spine. Square and tight with surprisingly little if any interior toning. Some off-setting to paste-down gutters. Small name and date on front end-paper as well as a faint "35". Board edges and spine have age spotting. Very attractive unclipped dust jacket, ($2.50), has very mild wear to spine ends and a bit of toning to spine and flap edges. Still fresh and bright with no creases, chipping or tears. A sharp overall, collectable copy and at a great price.
Synopsis
A Bell for Adano is a film directed by Henry King starring John Hodiak and Gene Tierney. The film was adapted from the novel A Bell for Adano by John Hersey, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945. The story concerns Italian-American U.S. Army Major Joppolo, who is placed in charge of the town of Adano during the invasion of Sicily.
