Octavo, 247pp. Patterned red paper boards, title in black on spine. Top edge dyed blue. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Solid text block, a touch of rubbing to corners, else fine. In publisher's first state dust jacket, $2.95 retail price on front flap, light wear and a few small chips to edges, faint brown stain along top edge of front panel, bright illustrations. (Bruccoli A12.1) Scarce in this condition. The sixth book in the Lew Archer series.

Synopsis

Ross Macdonald's real name was Kenneth Millar. Born near San Francisco in 1915 and raised in Ontario, Millar returned to the U.S. as a young man and published his first novel in 1944. He served as the president of the Mystery Writers of America and was awarded their Grand Master Award as well as the Mystery Writers of Great Britain's Gold Dagger Award. He died in 1983.
