About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1973. First edition. Ex-library hardback first edition with the usual stamps, although all of these have been neatly covered over on the front endpages with a few photocopies of some of the book's B/W illustrations. Otherwise VG with an intact DW which at first sight looks VG externally but has a water stain at the foot of the back cover and a couple of small sellotape reinforcements. 272 pages including index. Lavishly illustrated throughout in B/W and colour. The 30 colour plates, many of which are full page, help this book to give a very rich picture of the life of Balzac and the French and European culture in which he operated. Over 10" by 7.5" This is a heavy item so extra postage will be required. An excellent coverage of the life and works of Karl Marx's favourite novelist. .

Synopsis

V.S. Pritchett was a novelist, short-story writer, critic and traveller. He was the leading critic of the New Statesman .
