Hardcover. 2 volumes in an early fine binding of full green morocco with 5 spine bands & ornate gilt compartments, inside gilt tooled borders & all edges gilt. Hinges & text are tight, clean & intact. First authorized & first complete edition, but it was first published anonymously in 1699. The 2 vols are separately paged: vol 1 (1 p , lviij, [14], 492 pp ) & vol 2 ( 7 p, 478, [2] p. ). Privilege at end of v. 2 dated 24 Mars 1717. A copper engraved frontispiece & 12 plates in each volume + a fold-out map in the rear of vol 2 tracing Telemachus's travels throughout the Mediterranean. Frontispiece portrait to vol 1 engraved by Duflos after Bailleul; frontispiece to vol 2 & the 24 plates engraved by Giffart after Bonnart (Worldcat). Edges are lightly rubbed. Armorial bookplate of Francis John Hughes. French text. Literature; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 970 pages .

Illustrated engraved frontispiece, and one plate. Lacks teh map and 23 of the 24 called for plates. Three quarter calf over marbled boards. Wonderful events in Telemachus, highlight the benefit of youth through German annotations, heavy words, phrases and constructions, gallicisms, antiquities, mythology, history, and geography are explained. Binding is intact, but the boards are heavily worn with some loss of teh leather, especially at the spine; text black is intact, and the pages clean, with no foxing or soiling. Previous owner's inscription to second blank (dated 1847, and a few 19th century library stamps to the text. Overall a Good only copy.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
