About This Item

Autograph, framed with portrait of the author.; c. 7.5x7.2 framed to 13x21 in; This receipt may have "...had something to do with the State of Maryland's agreement to indemnify the individuals who had lost property as a result of the Baltimore riots in August 1835. Morris was a trustee of the failed Bank of Maryland.... Morris also evidently had copies of the prints headed for the state's library in Annapolis, which were also damaged or destroyed (see Maryland State Library Commission, Seventh Annual Report to His Excellency The Governor of Maryland for the Year 1909, p. 48). Audubon presumably had submitted an indemnity petition to the State of Maryland seeking reimbursement, or Morris had filed one on his behalf. The receipt would appear to acknowledge that Morris had paid Audubon for what the state owed, and Audubon was transferring his claim to Morris. This makes practical sense because Audubon was about to leave the country, and he would have far preferred to have cash in hand (especially because the country was in another depression) rather than waiting for payment to be made by the state. The reference to "four per cents" could be a reference to the interest the state was going to be paying or to bonds it was issuing.". All the foregoing the kind correspondence of Peter B. Logan .; All shipments through USPS insured Priority Mail.
