Original pebbled black cloth with blindstamped designs and letters, and illustrated title in gilt on the front cover. Light fray to corner tips and spine ends. Some stain and soil to cloth and textblock edges. Floral endpapers. First blank shows small booksellers pencil to top corner, ""1st Ed. 50.00 Californiana Anti-Tobacco, Pro Temperance Views of Old West and Native Americans"". Else pages unmarked. Includes tissued frontis + 5 full-page plates, and many text illustrations. Corner tips and spine ends lightly frayed; .25 inch cloth tear near top edge in rear joint. Howes W181. Amazing pioneer experiences, observations, opinions and historical events. Crossing the Plains in 1852. Travels in California, Missouri, and Kansas. Missions; circuit-riding; Indians; General Vallejo, Slavery; Elk, grizzly and buffalo hunting; even a man eaten alive by wolves.
