About This Item

Two volume hardcover set, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1897. First published in 1836, this is the two volume 'Tacoma' edition. Bound in red buckram with an intricate gilt design on front covers, gilt to the top edge of the text block. Volume I includes fifteen black & white plate illustrations, Volume II includes thirteen black & white plate illustrations. The illustrations include drawings by R.F Zogbaum and C. Harry Eaton, engravings by S.P Davis, and E.C. Held, as well as engravings based on photos from 'Hunting Trips of a Ranch Hand' by Theodore Roosevelt. Each illustration is faced with a somewhat translucent tissue page, each tissue is intact. Each text page is bordered with a woodcut design. 6-3/8" X 8-7/8", 390 pages for each volume. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Gilt lettering and design elements are all intact and show very little wear or rubbing. Spine shows some light fading to the red cloth cover, though all lettering is still entirely legible. Occasional age tanning spots to the edge of the text block, as well as to some of the edges of the illustration plates. The place holder ribbons are included, though they are no longer attached to the binding. Very sturdy boards and heavy weight stock, combined weight of the two volumes is more than 5-1/2 pounds. Sewn binding is entirely intact. This is not a library discard. This is the account of the Astor Expedition commissioned by John Jacob Astor, including the voyage of the Tonquin, and the explorations of Oregon by Wilson P. Hunt. The group of about 60 men became known as the Astorians, the first major party to cross to the Pacific after the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A beautiful set of this important work. Attached photos are of the copies we have in our inventory. For International buyers - Please note that considering the weight and value of the set, additional postage will need to be charged in addition to the standard price listed here.

Let us know, we'd love to hear from you! Do you want to see a photo of a book before you order it ? We try to post as many photos as possbiel, but sometimes there will be a item in inventory that does not show a photo here. So feel free to ask for photos, we don't mind at all. We package all of our orders carefully either in a box that has been designed to ship books, or in a padded envelope. We want to make sure you receive your order in the best possible condition! Our preferred shipping method is USPS Media Mail. Recently, the USPS has added tracking to Media Mail , which has been a great addition to this service. If you do choose to have your order shipped "Expedited", my shipping cost may seem higher than expected. Some of our books are large format hardcovers that can cost quite a bit when shipped expedited. So I would like to make sure that I can cover the cost upfront. However, if the actual cost of expedited shipping is less than the charge, I will refund the difference!
