The red cloth binding is scraped on the lower half of the front panel, otherwise in very good condition. Clean with gilt decoration on front, gilt titles on spine. Paper panel, decorated with musical instruments, affixed to spine. Endpapers with a unique illustration of the history of art. Inner hinge Binding is tight, and solid, sewn binding. Internals toned, quite clean, no markings of any kind. Many full color drawings by Van Loon, in color and wash and b/w --so delightful! Van Loon's humor is also delightful. And as he says: "This book was written and illustrated by Hendrik Willem Van Loon to give the general reader (who perhaps had always considered this a rather remote subject) a better understanding and a greater appreciation of everything that has been done within the realm of painting and architecture and music and sculpture and the theater and most of the so-called minor arts from the beginning of time until the moment we come so close to them that we begin to lose our perspective." 677 pages with A Section on "A Few Musical Instruments" and Index. 6.5 x 2 x 9.75 inches. 1937, Simon & Schuster, New York, New York,
