About This Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott and Co, 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. This book is inscribed to Lydia A. Coonley and her husband, from uncle and aunt, dated Christmas 1867. Coonley (1845-1924)was an American poet whose collected works were published as "Singing Verses for Children" and "Under the Pines and Other Verses." She was also active in the women’s movement and was president of the Chicago Women’s Club from 1895-1896. This exquisite volume combines art and poetry in a glossy full-leather volume embellished with gilt lettering and decorations on the spine and front board. Engravings of famous paintings illustrate the words of Byron, Coleridge, Shakespeare, Wordsworth, and others. All edges gilt. Corners of boards are bumped and spine shows some wear, but leather has been treated to appear clean and glossy. Interiors have mild foxing throughout. Hinges are sturdy and binding is tight. This attractive volume has a rich history and would make a lovely addition any library of poetry. Full refund if not satisfied.
