Clarence Cook was not only the first but also the foremost art critic of the last part of the 19th Century. While Europeans were disdainful of American art, he was able to show how Whistler and Gardiner were the equals of the best of Europe's artists. He founded a Pre-Raphaelite organization and led in the "Truth in Art" movement.
