Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856. First Edition . Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Dr. Elisha Kane. From the recently auctioned collection of Adrian and M. B. Goldstone--with the auction tag laid in and the penciled signature of famed collector Goldstone on the front free endpaper. In two volumes--dark brown cloth over boards with gilt lettering to the spines. Blind stamped artwork to the front boards of sailing ship. Vol I has a fold out map that is complete and as new. Both volumes are illustrated by the author. Vol I has light edgewear and rubbing with some soiling to the page edges--but a strong spine and hinges. Vol II has some loss to the top 1/2" of cloth at the crown of the spine--along with some light edgewear and rubbing to the extremities and some soiling to the page edges also--but again the spine and hinges are tight. A collectable copy of a title that told the story of Kane's exploration of the Arctic region as he served as ship's Dr. Kane turned out to be an expert storyteller and illustrator--and the result was that this publication was a top seller in the mid 19th century. A great read. Will be shipped Priority mail at media mail pricing.
