About This Item

Philadelphia: Childs & Peterson, 1856. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Two volumes. Publisher's brown decorative cloth stamped in blind, gilt spines. Volume 1 has a frontispiece portrait, added engraved title, 1 folded map and 11 other plates; Volume 2 has a frontispiece portrait, added engraved title, 1 folded map, 1 full-page map (plate), and 7 other plates. Both volumes are also illustrated with in-text wood-engravings. Small contemporary owner's signature (dated 1856) in neat ink on the front flyleaf of volume one only. Rubbing to the boards and scattered wear to the edges and corners, modest scattered foxing to the engraved plates at the front of each volume, the folded map in volume one is detached, and the folded map in volume two is torn along one horizontal fold with scattered creasing, else still a very good, handsome set in the original publisher's bindings.
