About This Item

[zurich]: Christoph Froschauer the Elder. Good with no dust jacket. [1546]. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. [viii], 87 ff. Small octavo. No printer or place given, preface dated 1546 at Tiguri, conforms to OCLC 888152253. Title page has engraved printer's mark of Christoph Froschauer the Elder (printer of the Zwingli Bible translation, Luther and Erasmus). Attractive modern binding with vellum spine and an incunable leaf (appears to be Plato) covering the boards. Renewed end papers and blanks. Title page has an old repair at the fore-edge and small ink initials at the top of the page, fore-edge of the book block marked DE11, text is clean and unmarked. Clear italic type. The first Zurich edition (2nd Latin) , the first German edition "Endtchrist" printed as well by Froschauer in 1546. Gwalther's rather scarce and important collection of sermons/homilies on the Antichrist, based on the prophesies of John in Revelation, on Acts, and on the apocalyptic endtimes prophecy in Matthew 24. Gwalther was Zwingli's son-in-law and, as can be expected, a strong Protestant reformer whose translations of Zwingli and his anti-Catholic and anti-papal writings and preaching were influential across the Protestant world. An attractive copy of this hard to find work on the Antichrist. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
