Title page has engraved printer's mark of Christoph Froschauer the Elder (printer of the Zwingli Bible translation, Luther and Erasmus). Attractive modern binding with vellum spine and an incunable leaf (appears to be Plato) covering the boards. Renewed end papers and blanks. Title page has an old repair at the fore-edge and small ink initials at the top of the page, fore-edge of the book block marked DE11, text is clean and unmarked. Clear italic type. Frontis engraved plate, red and black title page. XLI illustrations. Original dark blue cloth with gilt seal to the front, gilt title. Spine tips lightly pulled and dusted, covers have some rubbing at corners and minor normal wear, front board slightly forward. Interior end papers are oxidized but otherwise text is clean and unmarked, remarkably nice condition. This is the New Edition , significantly added to after the 1867 first edition. Title page quite darkened, some staining, old library emboss, edge chipping, library stamps to verso. Page 27 has a piece torn out of the bottom margin just slightly affecting a few letters of the text, otherwise normal moderate aging and foxing, red stamp to verso last text leaf, binding sturdy. An attractive copy of this scarce Boston first edition. Chauncy was "the theologian of the American Revolution," a liberal protestant who disagreed with the Great Awakening and wrote on the benevolence of the deity and who believed in universal salvation. Thick folio, 12.25" in handsome binding with modern leather spine with raised bands and gilt stamping in the compartments, dark brown morocco label, antique marbled heavy boards with a bit of rubbing to the corners. Interior has old reinforcement at gutters and end papers renewed a century ago with ink ownership inscription. Vol. I & II appear to be in original 3/4 leather, which is sill handsome, worn at spine with brown library tape holding boards and repaired corners.
