Gwrecsam [Wrexham]: Argraphwyd Gan A. Tye, 1815. vii, 388p. Welsh Lanuage. John Thomas, Penfforddwen left his native Wales to serve as a customs officer in Liverpool where he became proficient in astronomy and published some small almanacks at the end of the 18th Century. The Welsh Biography notes he also had been a seaman and a schoolmaster. Very scarce none listed on OCLC. The British Library notes there is a copy at Cardiff University. The book has an English rendering of the Welsh on title page: An Address to the Youth of the Principality of Wales Part I: Rules to teach Englishmen how to pronounce the Welsh Language with a compendious new Welsh Grammar together with the rules of Welsh Poetry. Part II Arithmetic ...Algebra and Logarithms Part III Natural Philosophy ..IV. Astronomy, Dialing [?], together with the art of Gardening. On occasion English words appear as such as "owns" and strangely enough the English word "virgin"--though the Welsh has the word as gwyryfol. Bound in full contemporary calf, light chipping to foot a few finger smudges to some leaves but no foxing or toning.
