About This Item

London: Gale & Polden, 1914. First printing. Hardcover. Very good overall. An unrecorded souvenir booklet "Official Souvenir De Luxe" for this poorly timed exhibition, which has a remarkably small historical record. It was the last exhibition at Shepherds Bush, London, at the White City. It opened May 14th, 1914, 3 months before the outbreak of W.W.I. Posters of the day anticipated being open through October.

Featured exhibits included an American piccaninny band recruited from a South Carolina orphanage; a working model of the Panama Canal, a replica of New York City (complete with skyscrapers), and a scale model of the Colorado Grand Canyon. One popular attraction was the 101 Ranch Wild West show which had been shipped over from Oklahoma. According to The Times "This is the first time that the Miller Brothers cowboys and cowgirls, who come from the 101 Ranch at Bliss, Oklahoma, have performed out of America". (Wikipedia) Despite being called an "Anglo American" exhibition, there are no illustrations of any British exhibits, with exception of an extraordinary ride called "Flip Flap", which looks dangerous.

Unrecorded on OCLC. A smattering of other items (program, postcards, poster, American Art Collection are recorded but this item is not. Sml oblong 8vo, [24pp], captioned photographic illustrations on each page. Tan grained buckram, gilt title and text, with a central medallion applied color illustration of the British and American entwined flags. Cloth spine, gilt a bit oxidized.
