Description:
London: John Murray, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. The authors own story of military life during W.W.I, as prisoner of war and his subsequent escape, with his signed presentation to Richard Coke. Edward Keeling, 1883-1954, was an officer in the Indian Army Reserve during the First World War, during which time he was captured by Ottoman forces and his description of an Anatolian prisoner of war camp is brisk and stark, and there is a postscript in which he denounces British refusal to prosecute those responsible for the mistreatment of prisoners. He escaped, eventually ending up in Bolshevik Russia before serving in Egypt and Kurdistan. His later life was considerably more tranquil, and he died as Member of Parliament for leafy Twickenham. (Wikipedia) 8vo, 240pp, frontis, b&w ills, 6pp ads, fold out map. Publishers blue cloth, gilt title at spine, embossed on front. Front hinge paper cracked but binding stable, dusty, spine head and foot rubbed, some early & late foxing not… Read More

London: Gale & Polden, 1914. First printing. Hardcover. Very good overall. An unrecorded souvenir booklet "Official Souvenir De Luxe" for this poorly timed exhibition, which has a remarkably small historical record. It was the last exhibition at Shepherds Bush, London, at the White City. It opened May 14th, 1914, 3 months before the outbreak of W.W.I. Posters of the day anticipated being open through October. Featured exhibits included an American piccaninny band recruited from a South Carolina orphanage; a working model of the Panama Canal, a replica of New York City (complete with skyscrapers), and a scale model of the Colorado Grand Canyon. One popular attraction was the 101 Ranch Wild West show which had been shipped over from Oklahoma. According to The Times "This is the first time that the Miller Brothers cowboys and cowgirls, who come from the 101 Ranch at Bliss, Oklahoma, have performed out of America". Description:
(New York?), 1915. Irish propaganda targeting the British during W.W.I. from the Irish World of January 30, 1915. During W.W.I, the struggle for Irish independence was suspended, with the Nationalist forces splitting over support of the war. This handbill appears to be an effort to incite hatred of the British, with racist descriptions of Fijian soldiers, "the cannibals we may say" who fought for the British. There is a clear preference for Germany - "And these are the savages, the cannibals we may say, whom Britain is bringing over to fight the most enlightened nation of Melancthon and SchlegeL of Kant... of Mozart and Beethoven and Wagner, of Goethe and Heine..." The text characterized the Fijians as cannibals, "dark copper colored, have black eyes and bushy hair worn in the form of a mop", short stature, protruding stomachs, legs bowed and feet flat, and usually nude. The photograph shows the Fijian soldiers standing at attention behind a British Officer, (photo by Paul Thompson). The text of… Read More

np (United States), 1918. An unrecorded broadsheet advertising a lecture by Skeyhill in the United States. It reprints a May 5, 1918 article from the Washington Times and the venue for the lecture is ink-stamped at the top "Y.M.C.A. Monday Night 9PM, Admission 30 & 50". Tom Skeyhill was an Australia soldier who claimed to have lost his sight in battle at Gallipoli in 1915, after which his war-hero status advanced his career, publishing the "Soldier-Songs from Anzac" in 1916, and lecturing widely as the "Soldier Poet of the Anzacs". In 1918, while on tour in the United States, he reported experiencing a miraculous cure after being treated by an osteopath. The account of his cure is described in his brochure, heaping praise on the doctor who restored his sight and his fervent desire to go back to the Front and resume fighting. Of course, the war was to end on November 11, 1918 and Skeyhill did not return to the Front. His story was recounted in the Literary Digest for December 28, 1918, (pp 56 & 57)… Read More
