He explains that this process has not been simple corruption, but has unexpected origins, more worrisome to our democracy. Eisenhower warned us in 1961 of the "disastrous rise of misplaced power" that could result from the increasing influence of the military-industrial complex; even George Washington warned of the dangers to the republic from overgrown military establishments.
