About This Item

Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 1935. First Edition. Quarto. National edition. xx, 151 pages, a nice association copy. Inscribed by a personal friend of the painter and the Wyeths.: Wilmington, Delaware, October 25, 1935 " Dear Father, this is the life work of Stanley M. Arthurs, who is a good friend of mine and who is going to eat pork chops with us at the house tonight. This is readily an important book as Stans?? is, next to your friend Wyeth, the most conspicuous pupil of Howard Pyle. Next time you come here we will search Stanley's studies instead of Wyeths. In addition to the good pictures herein, the notes are of special interest because they are written by the whole....? and .....?, Wishing you a Happy New Year; Affectionally, Manasses." Howard Pyle enthusiastically accepted him as a student in 1897 when Pyle left Drexel Institute to open his own school in Wilmington. Arthur went with him and upon Pyle's death in 1911, he purchased the studio and was determined to devote himself to creating accurate paintings primarily of American history. This culminated in the book published by the University of Pennsylvania in 1935. Printed E. E. Hildreth and Co. on rag Worthy permanent book paper, bound in Murphy-Parker Co. of Philadelphia in ¼ red pebble grained Morocco over beige Athol linen cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, some spotting or toning to page edges of the front free endpaper, half-title and title page. A very good copy.
