New York: Macmillan Company 1908, 1897. (Hardcover set) 726, 904pp. Very good plus, no dust jackets. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Notes, appendix, index. The covers and spines are lightly edgeworn and lightly bumped at the corners, the first volume has a red mark on the bottom edge, the endpapers are toned and there is a previous owner's blind stamp on the half-title page of both volumes. "'What do you think of our institutions?' is the question addressed to the European traveller in the United States by every chance acquaintance. The traveller finds the question natural, for it he be an observant man his own mind is full of these institutions. But he asks himself why it should be in America only that he is so interrogated" - from Chapter I. Time Period 19th Century & 20th Century. Vol. 1 The National Government - the State Governments.
