London: Cassell and Company, 1932. [Children's Illustrated] FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION. Octavo (22 x 19cm), pp.[xvi]; 193; [3]. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt titles to spine and upper, decoration to upper, top edge tinted black. Illustrations throughout. Occasional spotting to textblock edge, a neat ownership inscription to front endpaper in black ink, else internally fine. Wearing to spine edges and head/tail, light wearing to board corners, minor marking to rear board. An attractive, very good copy. These two early manuscript books by Lewis Carroll originated as a family effort but quickly became the young man's independent project.

A collection of nonsense verse, including "Phantasmagoria" and the complete "Hunting of the Snark". 12mo: xii, 214, [1], [1] p. with 65 illustrations by Arthur B. Frost and 9 by Henry Holiday. Original green cloth binding, with gilt stamping. Typical toning to the frontispiece and title page, with some light foxing to the prefatory and concluding leaves. Period bookplate and previous owner's pencil signature to the front endpaper, with a clipped bookseller's description (Goodspeed, 1941) tipped in on the front flyleaf. The spine is darkened a touch, with some mild wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good.

Publisher's original blue cloth boards with titles in gilt to the upper board, illustration and titles in gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with 12 full page colour plates and line drawings throughout the text by Mabel Lucie Attwell. A very good or better copy, the binding square and firm with a little wear to the spine tips and corners. The cloth with just a few light marks is otherwise bright and fresh. The contents, with an ink inscription to the blank front endpaper and mild foxing to the prelims and text block edge, are otherwise clean and bright. Original grey pictorial card covers printed in blue and red, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with line drawings by Mervyn Peake throughout. A superb near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the spine tips and some minimal wear to edges and corners. The contents, with a few very tiny spots to the text block edges and a little dustiness to the bottom corner of the text block, are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, the lettering to the lightly toned spine moderately faded. A lovely copy. A beautiful example of the first Mervyn Peake illustrated edition preceding the UK Alan Wingate issued edition by eight years.
