Washington D. C.:(2002): National Gallery of Art/Harry Abrams. First Edition. Thick Quartos. . In two volumes. lxiii, 1012 pages, v. 1: 1886-1922 -- v. 2: 1923-1937. Includes bibliographical references (pages 972-990) and index. This is now the essential reference work that reproduces and traces the history of all 1,642 photographs referred to as the photographer's "key" set. After his death in 1945, Georgia O'Keefe and Doris Bey sorted through more than 2500 of his photographs and selected at least one copy of each print that the perfectionist photographer had considered fine enough to mount. Sarah Greenough's introductory essay traces the history of the "key" set and reproduces chronologically his works (in most cases the National Gallery has the only known copy). His portraits of artists such as John Marin, Paul Strand, Arthur Dover and Charles Delmuth as well as those of O'Keefe are remarkable in themselves. While essential for museums and art galleries, it is unlikely any serious aficionado of great photography will not consider this a vital part of their reference library. A fine set bound in beige cloth, spine lettering black, housed within publishers fine slipcase. (This set weights 18 pounds and will require extra shipping cost depending on zipcode).
