He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1930. He then worked as a playwright and screenwriter in Hollywood, where he wrote for several films including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Secret Garden." Ardrey is perhaps best known for his non-fiction works on human evolution and behavior. His most famous book, "African Genesis: A Personal Investigation into the Animal Origins and Nature of Man," was published in 1961 and became an international bestseller. The book explored the idea that human behavior is rooted in our evolutionary past, and it had a significant impact on the field of anthropology. In addition to "African Genesis," Ardrey wrote several other books on human evolution and behavior, including "The Territorial Imperative: A Personal Inquiry into the Animal Origins of Property and Nations" and "The Hunting Hypothesis: A Personal Conclusion Concerning the Evolutionary Nature of Man." Ardrey's work was controversial at the time and challenged many prevailing ideas in anthropology, but it has since been recognized as an important contribution to the field. Ardrey continued to write and lecture on human evolution and behavior until his death in 1980. Despite the controversy surrounding some of his ideas, his work remains influential and continues to be studied by anthropologists and other researchers.
