About This Item

Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press [1970], 1970. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo. [8], viii-xii, [1], 2-483, [1] [1], ii-xx, [2] pp. Blue-grey cloth with silver lettering on the front board and spine, gold decorations on the front board and spine. Price of $8.95 on the front flap of the dust jacket. Illustrated with ten maps outlining diagrams of different historical eras on the African continent. Hallett's volume starts at the earliest fossils of humans found on the continent, and goes on to cover the Ancient Egyptian civilization, the empires of Ghana and Mali, the history of Berber peoples in the north, the migration of Bantu peoples, the history of the Ashanti, the Zulu, and the Swahili civilization, as well as the effects of European imperialization. The maps in the book carefully outline the boundaries of the different civilizations on the continent, and show which languages were spoken in the different regions of Africa. The Guardian, "Robin Hallett". Hallett as a scholar was not an ardent anti-colonialist in his views, but did believe that European peoples were too dismissive and ignorant of African history and culture. Throughout his work he sought to demonstrate the intricacies, the dynamism, and the achievements of the different ethnic groups who resided in Africa. A Very Good book with a bit of foxing to the textblock and a tiny separation between the backstrip and the textblock; jacket is Very Good with edge wear and a bit of fading to the spine panel.
