Hartford, Connecticut: Columbian Book Company, 1872. First Edition. Octavo. 327 pages, (1)pp. ad. "a vivid narrative of a pedestrian pilgrimage of 3500 miles from Carolina to California". Cowan, II, p. 498 "The author, later famous as a distinguished ethnologist, journeyed from Raleigh to San Francisco, a distance of 3,556 miles. ... his descriptions are entertaining and frequently amusing.". The book was reprinted as late as the 1880's and became one of the classics on California. Bound in a brown pictorial cloth centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, some rub through to upper board fore-edges, spine with wear and chipping, front inner hinge apparently had been reglued, previous owner's stamp to verso of frontispiece. A good copy. [Zamorano 80. Howes P537].
