About This Item

London: John Murray, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. The authors own story of military life during W.W.I, as prisoner of war and his subsequent escape, with his signed presentation to Richard Coke. Edward Keeling, 1883-1954, was an officer in the Indian Army Reserve during the First World War, during which time he was captured by Ottoman forces and his description of an Anatolian prisoner of war camp is brisk and stark, and there is a postscript in which he denounces British refusal to prosecute those responsible for the mistreatment of prisoners. He escaped, eventually ending up in Bolshevik Russia before serving in Egypt and Kurdistan. His later life was considerably more tranquil, and he died as Member of Parliament for leafy Twickenham.
