Some staining and foxing, especially endpapers. Slight thumbing throughout text. A few pages show signs of dampness. Neat little volumes in need of some TLC.

Lesage's picaresque novel "Gil Blas" is set in Spain but is almost certainly a satire of his own early 18th-century France. Portraying many different classes and occupations within society, both reputable and otherwise, the book traces the hero's life journey from miserable poverty to a wealthy retirement in his own castle. This "new " translation was by Tobias Smollett, English author of "Roderick Random," a book modelled on "Gil Blas."
