About This Item
London: Burns, Oates & Co, 1868 First English edition, translated by the author from the French. Preface dated Dec. 1867, so probably published in 1868 though not dated in publishing details. Hardcover book . Full dark brown leather over bevelled boards with gilt title to spine and elaborate gilt decorations to boards and spine, as well as gilt dentelles and all page edges gilt. 200pp. No illustrations. The life of Monsignor Justin de Jacobis, a Christian monk in Abyssinia who lived from 1800 to 1860 and who was revered for his piety. This copy has a pencil gift inscription on front free endpaper: 'To Edward Dawson with Father Giles' best wishes'. A Poor copy overall that needs rebinding work, as the covers are detached from the text-block. The contents are fair to good, the main text block holding together and the pages mostly clean, the prelim leaves before the title page are detached (present), and the text block itself is detached from the covers. The covers themselves are good, wih bright gilt, but with various marks and scuffs.
